December 12th
Tangerine
1-21

Prompt: Summarize

The book Tangerine is about a boy named Paul who lives with his mother, father, and brother. They moved to Florida from Texas. Paul has very poor eye sight, even with thick glasses on he still can't see. He says that he can see what his parents cannot see, but he hasn't explained it yet. His older brother plays football, and plays the kicking position.  He can kick a field goal from 50 yards away. He sneaks out at night sometimes and then Paul can't sleep. There house is basically on top of a Muck fire. It's coal under ground, and when lighting strikes, theres smoke everywhere. All around the house by the second floor windows. All they can do about is wait for it to rain, or close all the windows in the house. Paul went to a nearby lake and checked it out, he heard a splash but no one or nothing was in it. The home owner says there are Koi in the lake down the street from the house. Koi is basically a giant goldfish. So if you go early in the morning you will be able to see them.

Attention always shift away from Paul to his older brother. The attention is always about football. The home owner has a son who plays football as well. He will be holding the kicks for  Paul's brother. I wonder if they will become best friends or enemies.  Erick (Paul's brother) says the coach wants him to be a star at the new high school. I think Paul may be a little jeaouls  of Erick, because he always blames him for everything.

I recommend this book to anyone 10 and up. It's a little boring, but I'm able to keep reading it. There's nothing really to graphic in the book yet. The narrator is Paul writing down in a journal on his computer. You wouldn't even think he has bad eye sight with how descriptive he is. Paul doesn't attention seek or doesn't pout when he doesn't get something. He's pretty Melo and keeps to himself.

"Never Fall Down"

12/4/14
Never Fall Down
Pages Read: Finished book
Prompt: Summary of the book

The year the book started in was 1975, but finishes in 1984. That's 9 years of surviving, starving, sickness with no medicine, and fighting for your life. Arn must be the toughest character ever. He's gone through so much, more than you can imagine. It's just unexplainable. The way the author uses word choice is powerful. I felt I was in the story that I was sitting right next to Arn and I was his shadow. I mean it's probably one of the best books I've ever read.
His personality changed a lot from the beginning till the end. He starts off nice and has feelings like the rest of us. Liked his next door neighbor nada favorite candy, had fights with his sister normal stuff. Then the war started happening, so everyone is traveling on feet, carrying their houses on their back from the youngest child to the oldest man. So you see men, women, and children just dyeing, in their sleep and sometimes they just drop dead to the floor. If they don't die like that the Khmer Rouge shoot them.
This story reminds me a little bit of the Haulucaust. You got the Khmer Rouge (Nazis) and their leader Angka (Hitler). It's so similar the army treats everyone unfair, even the rich people. If you don't do whats told or break the tiniest rule they will kill you. Then Angka is the leader of them that tells everyone what to do, just like Hitler did.
I recommend this story to anyone in 6th grade or up. This has some pretty brutal scenes in it. Very descriptive words that made every bone in my body shiver. Plus appropriate age does a big part. They do some things and say some things that kids shouldn't read about, so I strictly say 6th or up.

Never Fall Down

Jeremiah T
Pages Read 57-119
Book: Never Fall Down

I have a lot of predictions about this book. After almost  every page I had a new prediction. The book leaves you guessing left and right. You don't ever want to stop reading it. I want to safe one of my predictions with you, I predict Arn is going to be the last one alive out of his group. They are traveling on foot in the hot sun all day, carrying heavy guns, ammo, and bags of rice. So someone will start complaining and blow their cover, then the Vietnamese will come and take them hostage.
The main character had two emotions for most of the book. Well mostly one, he is cold hearted. It's like the Khmer Rouge took away his innocence and his friendly heart. He doesn't even feel anything when someone gets killed, because people get killed everyday. If you show sympathy, you die, if you see a prisoner you die, and if you try to talk back or take a break, you die.
I recommend this book to anyone 12 and up. It is very interesting, it may not be a little easy to understand, but there is some intense language and moments in this book. I didn't expect this at all when I started to read this. I feel like I'm in a war against the Vietnamese everyday and fighting for my life. The author uses very explicit detail, so it may make you want to throw up.

Never Fall Down

Jeremiah T
11/13/14
Prompt:Analyze the impact word choice has on the meaning or tone of a text.Analyze how dialogue or specific incidents reveal information about characters. Make sure to include textual evidence.

The book I'm currently reading is "Never Fall Down" and word choice plays a big part in the text. The main character (Arn) is the narrator of the story. He is about my age maybe 11 or 12, even though
you understand what he's reading and can visualize what's going on he sometimes writes complete sentences. Although you still understand him and can easily visualize what's going on.  It feels like your actually watching a movie about a kid in Cambodia, that doesn't speak English that well.

In the book, I feel like I'm actually in Cambodia taking orders from the Khmer Rouge and trying to survive without getting killed. They took away all of Arn's innocent soul. Here's an example on page 53 "Then the guy with the ax, he look at me. Deep in the eye. To see what I feel. I make my eye blank. You show care, you die. You show fear, you die. You show nothing, maybe you live." To me, it's really sad, but I guess he must have to learn to keep his life. I would do the same, learn to survive and change my feeling from time to time. Another example is "They see me looking at a prisoner, they think maybe I'm bad too. One day I see this guy from hometown, the taxi driver, the one with the big belly, the one I gamble and beat. Same guy but skinny now, no belly, skin sagging off his bone. I see him kneeling in the square, his hands tie behind, and I think: this guy can get me kill only by looking at me." I put this because he can't even see anyone from his old town without getting himself hurt or killed. Also you can't show any knowledge or the Khmer Rouge kills you.

Arn is very intelligent and kind. But his personality changes a lot in this book. He used to like this girl but he can't anymore because if you do you die. When he's the cook he steals a little rice at a time. See Arn is smart, he realized rice is like money. If you get your hands on it you can do almost anything. He bribes people with rice, he even bribed a soldier, and they are supposed to kill you if they find something like this out. Since he is the leader of the band, the Khmer Rouge give him breaks, but those breaks may not last forever.

1st Quater Reflections

The first quarter was fun but challenging. I am interested in the 40 book challenge. I'm on my 11th or 12th book in the 40 book challenge. It's pretty fun being challenged to read a lot of books. I'm going to try read more than 40, which I believe is possible. My blogging skills from August until now have improved a lot. My blogs are way better now than they were in August. The best blog I did was the Poe Reflections.
I learned a lot about the world and new people. I learned about Ebola, I never even heard about. I learned about the CDC virus, and that was happening in the Mid-west. I learned some new things about Malala, and Poe. Poe is now one of my favorite authors. He is very descriptive, and talented. I never even heard about him though, until I did research. My research improved a lot as well. I knew how to do research but not as good as I do now.
This has been a great first quarter, i've learned so many things. Like writing a paragraph and not sounding repetitive. I got decent grades, all b's and one a, I hope they improve this quarter. I have a few things to work on though, like studying for the vocal quiz. I usually do a good job until now. But that's going to change and improve. I'm positively getting all A's this quarter. So we will see if this quarter is as same as the 1st one.

Poe Reflections

Jeremiah T
11/7/14

Poe's life could've effected his writing a lot, since he writes about dark and evil things and moments. Since he lost his father and mother at such a young age, and his brother and sister were separated from him. He had been through a lot of dark times himself. Going to college but being to poor to keep warm and has to burn his furniture to make heat. He was in gambling depths and couldn't pay them off and was struggling, so going through dark times and moments, could have led him to writing all those dark stories and poems.
What I found intriguing was that he been through so many dark times and things, but still became an excellent writer. Some people go through those times and make excuses about why they couldn't be someone or something. They say they couldn't do it because of this or that. Excuses left and right, but Poe did something with his life. Poe went back to his house to find out his fiancee had been engaged to another with his absence. He achieved his goal of going to the army and publishing his first book "Tamerlane" at the age of 18. Another thing I found intriguing was Poe and Abraham Lincoln were born on the same day.
Before my research I didn't know anything about Poe. I actually never even heard of him. Although  I'm glad I found out about him because he was very interesting to learn about. He had some really good things happen in his life and some really bad things. he's is a very good author and is very descriptive. I want to try to read more books by him and find out more about him.
I'm curious though, no one knows exactly how he died. People don't know they just give suggestions, but when I read other people suggestions no one thought the same thing I did. I think he died from diabetes. I think he died from that because he was unconscious in the hospital but never could recover enough to tell what is wrong. My brother had diabetes and went unconscious for a long time but the gave him medicine and he was a little better. Back then though, they didn't have the same medicine or technology we have today.
Even though I just started learning about Poe, I want to keep learning and discovering new things about him. I'm going to tell people about him and recommend his stories. So if you haven't heard about Poe look him up, and read y favorite book by him "Tell Tale Heart

"

"Never Fall Down"

Jeremiah T
11/6/14
Summarize
Book: Never Fall Down
pages read: 3-41

I'm currently reading the book Never Fall Down so far it is surprising and a good story. The main character is a boy named Arn who has to look after his family, even only at 12 years old. He gambles against older men to gain money and bribes the monks so he can get out of school to sell ice cream. He's not the best writer but it's still very descriptive and entertaining.
The book is about Arn and his family in Cambodia struggling to get enough food for everyone and clothes. He lives with his aunt, 3 sisters and younger brother. One day Arn and his family had to leave their town because a group named Khmer Rouge says America is going to bomb the whole town. They get all of there stuff and march far deep into the country and jungle.
This book reminds me of Hitler and the Nazis. The Khmer Rouge is like the Nazis but I don't know who the leader is. They are an army and they basically tell everyone what to do. One soldier told a teenager let him ride his bike, and the boy says no because he has to go home. But the soldier hits the kid in the face with his gun and knocks him out cold. You have to be careful with them, do one thing wrong you can get killed.

Never Fall Down

Jeremiah T
10/31/14
Prediction
Blog of the week
pages read 1-23

The book I'm currently reading is called Never Fall Down it is really good so far, I can't wait to finish it. They are in fear of getting bombed by America, so the whole town is leaving. It takes place in Cambodia. The main character is a boy named Arn. He lives with his aunt and 4 sisters and little brother. They are poor and go to a poor school that are reached by Monks.
Currently they are traveling, they have gone so far Arn and his aunt don't even know were they are anymore.  A lot of people are dying because they are traveling to far and barely have any food and supplies to live. Even though a lot of people died, I think even more are going to die because America is going to bomb them out. Or America is going to shoot at them, but Arn will get away and be alone.
I recommend this book to anyone in 5th grade or older. Their aren't that much challenging words because Arn has english errors when he speaks. But it's still very descriptive I feel like I'm in the actual book. Like when an soldier killed a man just because he wouldn't let him ride his bike. It's got all types of surprises, so when you read it, be prepared.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

10/22/14
The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night Time
Favorite Characters
Least favorite character

My favorite character from the book is Christopher. We seem to have a lot in common, we both love math, we can only wright about real life events or things that happen, and we love mysteries. He's different though, he's really honest and kind. as long as you don't touch him because he hates being touched. He will hit you if you touch him for to long.
His father is one of my least favorite characters, even though he looked after Christopher by himself since he was 6. But he lied to Christopher, he told him his mom was dead when she was really in London with her new boyfriend. He killed Wellington and didn't want Christopher trying to find out who murdered him. His actions made Christopher run away and face a lot of his fears,he  traveled to London to find her and live with her.
Christopher has a lot of conflict in this book. Two of the main conflicts were man vs self and man vs society. One example of man vs man was when he was arguing with his dad and ran away. Another one was when he hit the police officer for touching him. An example of man vs society when he was at the train station and he was terrified of everyone. When he was on the train he stayed in the bathroom cupboard, no one noticed him until they took their suitcases from out the cupboard.

The Lady Or The Tiger?

Every heart stopped beating, every breath was held, every eye fixed immovably upon that man. Without the slightest hesitation, he went to the door on the right and opened it.  As he opened the door with a smile, he thought he was going to see a beautiful lady standing there. But a vicious tiger with teeth as sharp as knives and nails as long as a mans finger pounced into the air on top of the man.
The man with his body full of terror tried to fight back but didn't have enough strenthg or power for the vicious beast. Right when the tiger was about to kill the man, he looked at the princess and she had a plane look on her face. Her eyes seem to be filled with evilness and cruelty, only if the man had new the princess  would be jealous if he married another women.  He gave her a look of sadness and despair then died instantly after the tiger bit his neck.

Direct and Indirect characterization

Jeremiah T.
The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night-Time
Author Mark Haddon

The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night Time has both direct and indirect characterization. The author uses indirect characterzation in chapter 11 page 9, it was "I didn't like him touching me like this. And this is when I hit him."The Author is using indirect characterization because he isn't telling us exactly what he is feeling or why we didn't like the police officer touching him. We just know that Christopher is uncomfortable so he hits the Police officer.

The setting can affect the main character Christopher a lot. When he went to the store with his mom he was afraid of all the people and got on the floor and started screaming. Or when he goes to a new place he always makes a map of how the place looks, he is frighten of being in a new surrounding with a lot of people he doesn't know. Thats why he hit the police officer, he doesn't like being touched, not even by his own parents. He doesn't hug them, he gives them hand hugs.

There isn't really a lot of conflict with Christopeher. Some parts are man vs man or man vs society. Conflict rose because his dad didn't want him to do detective work and try to find out who killed Wellington. Then his dad is always telling him to stop the detective work and stop writing in his book. Another time conflict rose was when Christopher was going on the train by himself and there were a lot of people, he was terrified, he could barely make it to the ticket booth. Then there was a police man looking for him to get him of the train but Christopher hides in a cupboard in the trains bathroom.

The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night Time

I am currently reading "The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night Time."  So far it is the best book i've ever read. The book is about 15 year old boy named Christopher Boone. He has Autism, and he try's to find the person who killed Wellington, a dog. He knows a lot about maths, but not a lot about people. He never has gone by himself anywhere further than the end of the road. But one day he sets out on a terrifying journey that will change his life.

This book is good for anyone who loves mystery novels. Also if you don't know about Autism, or never heard of it, you should reads it because the narrator and detective and has Autism. The author uses words that the describe things very well, it makes you fell like your in the actually book.I recommend it to anyone in 6th grade or higher. As long as it's on your level or if you can understand it, because it has some pretty challenging words.

10 book list challenge

1.Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone.
The book was interesting to me because I like the genre fantasy. It also had some intense and action moments. Harry didn't think anyone cared about him since his aunt and uncle would treat him wrong. They make him do all the work and spoil his cousin Doodley who is a bully to him. Then Harry gets a letter in the mail saying he was excepted into the school of witchcraft and wizardry. He was the son of a great wizard and witch. He goes on many journeys and learns a new sport. But he goes on one adventure that changes his life.

2.Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief
Percy Jackson wasn't the coolest kid going to school. He wasn't the smartest either. But he was special. He just didn't know it. His best friend always got bullied because he had bad legs.  One day he went to a field trip with his school. Instead  of his math teacher he had an old cranky substitute. But at this field trip he's going to, his life is going to change forever.

3.The Fourth Stall
You've seen the Godfather. Now come look at the 4th Stall. Chris Rylander is the Godfather of his school. When you ask for something and give him the rite price he'll handle it for you. But some challenges are tougher than others. When one day he meets the toughest challenge of all.  Will he be able to accomplish this mission, going through bully's and high schoolers.

4.Percy Jackson And The Sea of Monsters
Reading this made me feel adventurous and action packed. There were a lot of intense battle scenes. Fighting monsters and each other. This is one of my favorite top five because of all the intense moments. It was very nerve wrecking as well. The author used key details that made chills go down your back like a cold winter day.

5.Wonder
This book had an impact on my life. It makes you think about how you treat people everyday. Do you think about how they feel? Do you look at them funny or weird? Do you think that you'll never talk to them? Without even getting to know them? Why we do these things? I don't know. But before someone judges someone Im going to tell them to go talk to them and get to know them. If they say no I'm going to talk to them and get to know them.

6.Green Eggs and Ham
This book was basically why I started to like reading. This is one of the first books I've ever read. First my dad read it to me and I instantly fell in love with it. I read it everyday. I liked the rhymes and the word play. But at the time I didn't know what that was. After about a month of reading that book my grandma showed me a new book which you will read about in number 7.

7.The Giving Tree
This book was good. I just didn't like the man on the back when I was younger. But besides that it was amazing. I learned you should always stay loyal to your friends. Even if they you move away and start a family. The tree was their for the man all the way and all he wanted was her stuff. at the end when he came back he could only sit on her stump but that made her happy enough. I thought that you shouldn't talk to or help the person anymore if they betrayed you. But when she let him sit on her stump, I realized you shouldn't always hold a grudge on someone you care about.

8.Diary of A Wimpy Kid (Series)
This book describes most middle school students today. I see people like this almost everyday. People trying to act popular, funny, cool, pretty, etc. It's an easy vacation book.I've read all of them cover to cover.  I read them when I'm bored and i've finished the book I'm currently reading. Well if you haven't read them, I highly recommend you read it.

9.Out of My Mind.
Honestly this book should've been in the top five but I wasn't thinking about it at the time. Its such an inspiration to all the kids out there there that are disabled. We always think just because they are in a wheel chair they aren't smart or funny.  Everyone is unique in their own way, people just judge base off of looks and not heart.

10.Holes
The way the author describes it I feel like I'm in the actual book, or I'm watching a movie. Stanley the main character has had bad luck all his life. He was a little over weight and always got bullied. His Grandpa says the bad luck comes from his no good dirty rotten pig stealing great great great grandfather. But one trip to Camp Green Lake his life changes. It starts out bad until one day when he gets stranded in the dessert with his best friend Zero, his luck finally begins to change.
